Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, is one of the most beloved and technically demanding works in the violin repertoire, though its journey to fame was famously rocky. Written in 1878 during a period of recovery in Switzerland following his disastrous marriage, the concerto is infused with a sense of renewal and melodic warmth. However, when Tchaikovsky first offered it to the great pedagogue Leopold Auer, it was rejected as "unplayable." At its eventual premiere in 1881, the influential critic Eduard Hanslick infamously described it as "music that stinks to the ear." Despite this brutal beginning, the concerto triumphed through its sheer lyrical beauty and fiery virtuosity, particularly the breathless Cossack-style finale that pushes the soloist to the absolute limits of speed and precision.

This edition is a reissue of music originally published by D. Rahter, Hamburg und Leipzig.
