Composed in the spring of 1900, "Appassionato" is the fiery second movement of Josef Suk’s Four Pieces for Violin and Piano, Op. 17. Dedicated to Karel Hoffmann—Suk's colleague in the celebrated Bohemian String Quartet—this late-Romantic miniature perfectly captures the composer's emerging emotional maturity and the unmistakable influence of his teacher and father-in-law, Antonín Dvořák. The piece is built on a framework of dramatic contrasts, kicking off with erratic, driving syncopations and bold cross-rhythms rooted in Slavic folk music. Suk masterfully alternates these intensely technical, heavy-bowed outer sections with a central core of lush, heartbreaking lyricism that stretches the violin into its warmest, richest registers. Ultimately, it stands as a brilliant showcase of turn-of-the-century Czech instrumental writing, balancing raw, muscular energy with breathtaking romantic vulnerability.

This edition is a reissue of music originally published by N. Simrock in 1900.
