Pablo de Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy, Op. 25, is a dazzling showpiece for violin and orchestra composed in 1882, based on memorable themes from Georges Bizet’s celebrated opera Carmen. Comprising five distinct movements—an introduction followed by adaptations of famous vocal numbers like the "Habanera," the "Seguidilla," and the dramatic "Gypsy Song"—the work reimagines Bizet's vocal melodies into brilliant instrumental virtuosity. Sarasate, himself one of the 19th century’s most celebrated violin virtuosos, loaded the score with extreme technical demands, including rapid left-hand pizzicato, soaring artificial harmonics, lightning-fast spiccato, and intricate double-stops, all while maintaining the fiery, seductive spirit of the original opera. Its seamless blend of Spanish flair, operatic drama, and uncompromising technical wizardry has made the Carmen Fantasy a permanent staple of the classical violin repertoire and a favorite showcase for master violinists worldwide.
