Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Piano Concerto in C-sharp minor, Op. 30, composed between 1882 and 1883, is a compact yet brilliantly expressive work that stands as a unique gem in the 19th-century Russian romantic repertoire. Dedicated to the memory of Franz Liszt, the concerto pays homage to the Hungarian master by adopting a continuous, single-movement structure split into three interconnected sections (Moderato, Andante, and Allegretto) built entirely around variations of a single Russian folk theme. Running under fifteen minutes, the concerto balances virtuosic pianistic flourishes with Rimsky-Korsakov’s signature lush orchestration and vivid tonal colors. Though relatively brief and infrequently performed today compared to the works of Tchaikovsky or Rachmaninoff, its innovative thematic economy and brilliant blend of Lisztian technique with authentic Russian nationalism make it a crucial milestone in the development of the Russian piano concerto.
