"I wrote a Pavane for a dead princess, not a dead Pavane for a princess." – Maurice Ravel
Maurice Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess) is a masterpiece of early 20th-century French Impressionism. Originally composed for solo piano in 1899, this melancholic and graceful work is one of Ravel's most beloved compositions.
The piece is a poignant homage to the slow, stately court dances of the Spanish Renaissance. Ravel's inspiration came from a painting by the Spanish master, Diego Velázquez, depicting a royal Spanish child. The composer imagined the stately pavane as it would be danced by a little infanta from the painting, infusing the music with a sense of nostalgic beauty and delicate sorrow.
This edition is a reissue of music originally published by E. Demets, Paris.
