Maurice Ravel's The Tombeau de Couperin is a poignant and masterfully crafted suite for piano, later orchestrated by the composer himself. Far from a somber requiem, the title "Tombeau" (a tribute or memorial) refers to a musical form popular in the French Baroque era. Ravel uses this framework to honor the 18th-century French keyboard tradition, specifically the style of François Couperin.
Composed between 1914 and 1917, each of the six movements is dedicated to a friend who died fighting in World War I. This deeply personal dedication imbues the work with a subtle, bittersweet emotion, balancing nostalgic elegance with a sense of loss.
This edition is a reissue of music originally published by Durand & Cie., Paris.
