Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 36 (1931 Revision), is a towering masterpiece of the Romantic repertoire, distilled into a more transparent and driving structural form. Displeased with the "superfluous" density of the original 1913 version, Rachmaninoff stripped away nearly 120 bars of music to create this leaner, more percussive iteration that heightens the work's emotional urgency. The three movements—played without pause—cycle through thunderous, cascading virtuosity, hauntingly introspective lyricism in the Non allegro, and a manic, bell-like finale that demands staggering technical precision. Characterized by its signature "bell" motifs and lush, chromatic harmonies, the 1931 version offers a more modern, streamlined architecture while retaining the raw, melancholic power that defines the composer’s unique voice.

This edition is a reissue of music originally published by A. Gutheil, Paris.
