Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in D minor, Op. 14, composed in 1912, serves as a brilliant bridge between his youthful iconoclasm and his maturing "classical" sensibility. Dedicated to his friend Maximilian Schmidthof, the work is structured in four movements and showcases the composer's signature "percussive" approach to the piano—a style that famously ruffled the feathers of the traditional St. Petersburg conservatory faculty.

While it retains a traditional formal structure, the sonata is infused with a restless, motoric energy and a sardonic wit that would become Prokofiev's hallmark. The Scherzo is particularly famous for its unrelenting, jagged drive, while the Andante provides a haunting, lyrical contrast that proves Prokofiev was capable of deep introspection despite his "enfant terrible" reputation. It is a work of sharp edges, sudden harmonic shifts, and a playful yet iron-willed virtuosity that remains a staple of the modern piano repertoire.
