Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219, often nicknamed the "Turkish" concerto, was composed in 1775 when the composer was just 19 years old. It stands as the crowning achievement of his five violin concertos, demonstrating a dramatic leap forward in structure, dramatic flair, and lyricism. The work opens with an energetic Allegro aperto that famously subverts expectations when the soloist enters not with a grand theme, but with a serene, slow Adagio phrase before jumping into the main tempo. After a deeply expressive second movement (Adagio), the concerto culminates in a graceful Rondeau minuet interrupted by a fiery, exotic central section in A minor. This unexpected middle section uses sudden shifts in meter, percussive low strings striking their instruments col legno (with the wood of the bow), and fiery Hungarian and Turkish folk motifs, giving the concerto its famous nickname and enduring popularity in the classical repertoire.
