Composed in 1775 when he was just nineteen years old, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major, K. 218 highlights his mastery of galant elegance, sparkling virtuosity, and opera-inspired lyricism. The concerto unfolds in a classic three-movement design (Allegro – Andante cantabile – Rondeau: Andante grazioso), opening with a stately "military" fanfare in the solo violin before diving into lighthearted, conversational exchanges with the orchestra. The second movement shifts into a quiet, aria-like song of serene beauty, but the true highlight of K. 218 is its imaginative final Rondeau: Mozart weaves together contrasting stylistic episodes—including a French courtly dance, a jaunty musette over a drone bass, and a spirited rustic folk tune known as the Strassburg—creating an exuberant, witty finale that remains one of the bright jewels of the violin repertoire.
