Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major is a masterclass in "thematic transformation," a technique where a single musical idea is evolved into various moods and characters throughout the piece. Though it took Liszt nearly two decades to finalize, the result is a remarkably compact work where four movements are played without pause, bound together by the famous, commanding opening motif. This concerto broke traditional boundaries by giving the triangle a prominent solo role in the third movement—a bold move that led conservative critics to mockingly label it a "Triangle Concerto," though it is now celebrated for its innovative orchestration.
