Antonin Dvořák’s Romance in F minor, Op. 11, composed in 1877, is a deeply expressive and lyrical work for solo violin and orchestra (or piano accompaniment). Reworked from the slow movement of his early String Quartet No. 5 in F minor, the piece showcases Dvořák’s signature blending of melancholic Slavic folk idioms with elegant Classical phrasing. Written in ternary form, it opens with a gentle, extended instrumental introduction in $6/8$ meter before the soloist enters with a soaring, wistful melody. The music gradually builds in emotional intensity, alternating delicate, shimmering arpeggios with passionate, dramatically surging tuttis that reveal Dvořák’s growing mastery of orchestration. Despite its overarching mood of quiet tenderness and nostalgic beauty, the piece balances introspective lyricism with moments of virtuosity, making it one of the composer’s most beloved short works for violin.
