A title that belies its true nature, Chopin's Scherzo No. 1 is a dramatic declaration of defiance and despair. Though "scherzo" means "joke" in Italian, there is nothing lighthearted about this masterful work.
Composed in 1831 during the Polish November Uprising, the piece is a direct reflection of Chopin's anguish and patriotism while he was away from his homeland. Dedicated to his friend Thomas Albrecht, this Scherzo marked a pivotal turning point in his career, shifting from his earlier brilliant style to a new, darker and more profound tonality.
