Johannes Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Paganini, Op. 35 (Book I), is widely considered one of the most formidable peaks of the entire piano repertoire. Composed in 1883, Brahms took the famous theme from Niccolò Paganini's 24th Caprice for Solo Violin and transformed it into a rigorous "school of virtuosity." While the theme itself is simple and iconic, Brahms uses it as a skeletal framework to explore extreme technical challenges that push the boundaries of human physiology. Unlike his more lyrical or symphonic variations, Book I focuses on visceral, muscular power and mechanical precision, featuring relentless double-thirds, wide-spanning tenths, and harrowing leaps that famously led contemporary critics to refer to the work as "variations for fingers of steel."
